Sunday 13th July 2008 saw over 1400 riders don their cycling shorts and helmets to take part in Capital to Coast, the annual Esher to Hove charity cycle challenge. The ride saw cyclists gather at Esher College in Surrey to tackle the scenic 60 mile journey to the beautiful seaside town of Hove, with the 30 mile option starting at Handcross Park School in Haywards Heath.  The ride was organised by one of the UK’s leading children and family services charities, Norwood, and raised funds for four partner charities; Norwood, Sparks, the Down’s Syndrome Association and Southern FM’s Help A Local Child.

Ian Tate, Head of Challenges at Norwood was thrilled the event went so well:

‘Our 13th Capital to Coast was blessed with wonderful weather and was a great day out for everyone. There were some very tired riders as they arrived in Hove, but everybody was delighted to enjoy the party atmosphere on the seafront. It was one of our most successful Capital to Coast rides to date and everybody really enjoyed taking part, not least Clive and Stephen, (one of Norwood’s service users with learning disabilities), who won our Front Rider competition back in May and cycled the route on a tandem.’

Initial results indicate that around £300,000 was raised, and all the charities are delighted with the result.

Ian comments: ‘This was the 13th Capital to Coast and certainly one of the most successful. The ride has raised a huge amount of money for four wonderful charities, which rely desperately on fundraising to help continue the fantastic work they do. I can only hope that next year we’re just as successful, and perhaps even exceed our 2008 rider numbers in 2009.’

Capital to Coast 2009 takes place on 28th June 2009, and riders signing up to next year’s ride will receive an early bird discount when registering before December 31st 2008 – just £15 for the full 60 mile option and £10 for 30 mile option. For further information please visit www.capitaltocoast.org.uk or call (0)20 8420 6944.
