| Zen and the Art of Project Management |
I have a bool on my bookshelf called "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance", written by Robert M. Pirsig. Described as "This book may very well be a profoundly important one--a great one even--full of insights into our most perplexing contemporary dilemmas ... " by the New York Times it isn't necessarily much at all to do about Motorcylcle maintainance. It got me thinking about Zen and The Art of Project Management. I am not aware of a book on the subject - perhaps I should write one after I finish the "Lazy Guide to Project Management" (I'll tell you about this another time, it is an idea of a friend of mine). It may not be obvious, but project management shares many zen characteristics. Project management itself is simple (not easy), even when the project isn't. It is often about simplify a set of complex needs and requirements, turning them into smaller, more digestible chunks. It is always about achieving a balance between scarce resources - people, finance and quality and the balance between the need to change and the natural conservative attitude that people often have when encountering large, or sometimes even small scale change. So, try a little Zen in your project management - you might find it enlightening. |
